About The Course

Learn NZSL (New Zealand Sign Language) Foundations online via MySign Education!

This introductory webinar is designed for educators who want to learn about the cultural and historical background of NZSL. It also offers practical strategies for integrating NZSL into the classroom. This webinar is suitable for educators who are new to NZSL.

Date: 23 October

Time: Wednesday, 5.00pm - 6.00pm

Fee: $60 including e-handout

Teacher: Victoria Lessing (Deaf)

Interpreter: Jodine Williams

Aims of the webinar:

This one-hour webinar aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), and its historical and cultural roots and to equip participants with the skills to communicate in NZSL and incorporate it into educational settings effectively. Participants will also develop strategies for engaging with the Deaf community and inviting Deaf guests (native NZSL users) to enhance learning experiences.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this NZSL Foundation for Educators webinar, learners will:

1.  Describe the origins and historical development of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), incorporating Māori sign concepts.

2.   Analyse the language functions of NZSL, emphasising NZSL grammar and semantics.

3.   Recognise key cultural behaviours of Deaf people, including the significance of attention and eye contact, and techniques such as waving and tapping to gain attention.

4.   Evaluate a variety of educational resources for teaching NZSL in the classroom and develop strategies to invite a Deaf guest to demonstrate NZSL proficiency.

5.  Engage in exercises to demonstrate essential communication skills, such as greetings, asking questions, and using basic classroom vocabulary.

Other information:

A qualified Deaf teacher will lead communication in the Zoom session with an NZSL interpreter present. You can ask questions in English, either by speaking or typing them in the chat.

At the end of the session, you will receive a copy of the e-handout. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us at Merge NZ at nzslforschools@mergenz.co.nz
